Subject:Celebration Day 2015
Approximately 1000 staff and guests gathered at the Humboldt Curling Rink on August 28 for Horizon School Division’s Celebration Day 2015. The event began with Makayla Glessman, Grade 7 student at Bruno School, singing O Canada, followed by a powerful performance from the George Gordon First Nation drum group, which includes Trustee, Benny Paul Crow-Buffalo.

Emcee and Deputy Director Randy MacLEAN then introduced Board Chair Jim Hack, Trustee Albert Pinacie, and Director of Education Kevin Garinger, who each brought greetings and welcomed attendees to the event.

In addition to his message of excitement for the coming school year, Mr. Garinger spoke about Horizon’s past – as this year marks the 10th Anniversary of Horizon’s formation – and shared a video slideshow highlighting Horizon’s 10 year history. The video was edited by Tyson Greff, Grade 12 student at HCI. Kaley Ingram, Grade 7 student from Quill Lake School, welcomed staff with a rousing message and call to action for Horizon’s teachers and staff on behalf of her fellow students. In the afternoon, attendees enjoyed a musical performance from singer/songwriter Shayna Scherbey, Ituna School Class of 2015.

The remarkable talent on display by Horizon’s young students set the stage for 2015’s Wall of Fame inductees who were in attendance to receive the honour and share their inspiring success stories. This years’ inductees are:

In addition to celebrating Horizon’s students and alumni, Celebration Day recognized the service of staff and Board Members. Over 125 people received awards for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service. Congratulations to all of this year’s Years of Service Award recipients.
