Subject:Gold for HCI at Skills Canada Sask
Alyssa Hofmann sewed her way to a gold-medal victory in the Fashion Technology event at Skills Canada Saskatchewan (SCS) last Friday. SCS 2015 took place in Moose Jaw on April 16-17. Alyssa’s event was held at A.E. Peacock Collegiate on April 17, testing her ability in garment construction working with commercial patterns in the field of children’s apparel design. As one of four competitors in this event, Alyssa had seven hours to cut and sew a child’s unlined coat from a commercial pattern while adding contrasting fabric and other details to enhance its appearance. As the winner of this competition, Alyssa will advance to represent Saskatchewan at the Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) in Saskatoon on May 26-29.

Alyssa, along with her coach and teacher, Barbara Hillier, have already begun preparing for the national competition. That event will test her ability in women’s apparel design. This was Alyssa’s second year competing in Skills Canada, and first gold-medal win. She is the fourth gold-medal winner HCI has had in these competitions – they also have two prior provincial silver medals and two national bronze. Alyssa was one of four HCI students who took part in the competition this year, including Lisa Popoff in the Baking event, Vance Hill in Carpentry and Abigail Seidel in Photography. Competing at this level is a major accomplishment requiring many hours of work from our students and staff. Congratulations to all of Horizon’s 2015 Skills Canada competitors and coaches!
