Humboldt Fire Dept. Visit
During Fire Prevention week, HPS was fortunate to have a visit from two of Humboldt’s Firefighters who spoke to the grade 1, 2, and 3 health classes about fire prevention and fire safety. Students were shown fire detectors and were told about the importance of having a fire safety plan for your home and any other place where you may regularly be (ie: cabin, camper, Grandma’s etc) . After the presentation and some Q and A time, students were shown a video starring Disney’s Timone and Pumbaa reinforcing the points of fire safety. Students were also encouraged to bring their families to the Fire Hall Open House. It was a great presentation and we thank the firefighters for taking the time to come in.

HPS Grade 2 Class Heads to the Museum
On October 16, the HPS grade 2 class walked up to the Humboldt and District Museum. They learned about life in the early years of Humboldt. They were told about Original Humboldt. They were able to experience a one room school house, a store and see what a kitchen in someone’s home might look like. Students were also give a small jar of cream that they shook and shook and shook until it made butter! Everyone enjoyed a piece of fresh bread with the butter they had just made! It was so yummy!
The students were also able to examine some of the fossils in the the stairs of the museum and had great discussions around those pieces of history!

Mix It Up at Lunch Day
On Oct. 28, HPS will be participating in a Mix It Up at Lunch event. This event, a project through Teaching Tolerance, is designed to break down cliques and foster acceptance. During lunch on October 28, students will be encouraged to sit with other students who they don’t usually sit with and get to know them. With the increasing cultural diversity within our student body, we are very excited about the possibilities Mix It Up at Lunch offers!

Book Fair and Parent Teacher Interviews just around the corner
It is hard to believe we are midway through October and heading into our first set of Parent Teacher Interviews. HPS’s Parent Teacher Interviews will take place Monday, Nov. 3 and Tuesday, Nov. 4. Our Scholastic Book Fair will coincide with the Parent Teacher Interviews and will take place in the library. Classroom viewing day will take place October 30 to avoid the Halloween festivities and shopping times will take place November 3 and 4 during the day. Parents and public are welcome at the book fair at any time!! See you there!

HPS Phase 2 Finished except Daycare
As school was gearing up for the 2014-15 year, HPS staff were on the move once again as phase 2 of the new build was complete. While the new daycare is still under construction with a Feb completion date, plans are moving ahead for what it will look like and how it will run. Staff and students alike are settling in and finding their way around. As well, the new library shelves have arrived and everyone is excited (though no one was as excited as Ms. Mulhern and Mrs. Stolz!!) ~to have full access to the books and resources our collection has to offer.
