Great Things Come In Small Packages……ARCHERWILL FAMILY CARNIVAL
What do you get when you mix student leadership, adult support and community involvement?  ….. Successful events that are fun, engaging and affirming!  Such is the success story from Archerwill School, where the Student Wellness Committee, which is comprised of eight grade 8 and 9 students, along with their adult advisor, Betty Rudachyk (KTHR Community Wellness Coordinator), organized a FAMILY CARNIVAL night, on Monday, October 6, 2014.  The evening’s theme of “Families Having Fun Together!” was designed around National Family Week (Oct. 6 – 12) and World Mental Health Day (Oct. 10th).  These student leaders, whose focus, within the school and community, is Health Promotion, captured it very well, when they stated, “One of the best ways to take care of your mental health is to have fun as a family.”  And fun was definitely had, by the approximately 130 people who attended!  The Archerwill School gym was transformed into a mini carnival venue, with many  ‘games of chance’ booths, an abundance of prizes,  a wacky- fun family photo booth, a fortune teller (Madame Fortuna, from Romania!!), and an amazing canteen that sold homemade sweet treats,  freshly made mini-donuts, real cotton candy ( made on site) and freshly popped corn!!  There were large, exotic animal decals on the walls, for visual ambiance; carnival music playing to energize/excite and the smells of popcorn, mini donuts and cotton candy, working together to stimulate the senses and create the illusion of being at a real carnival!!  The sounds of family laughter and squeals of delight and success, at the ‘games of chance’, were worth their weight in gold, as the goals of this young leadership team, were met on this fabulous evening, that celebrated the gift of ‘Family’ and promoted  the importance of mental health.  The SWC and Ms. Rudachyk are very grateful for the parents, peers, community members and staff at Archerwill School, who helped to make this great event a huge success!
