The Horizon School Division TreatySmarts Collaborative Art Project
An innovative Treaty Education project is currently underway in Horizon School Division. The project focuses on providing students with an opportunity to learn about the arts and culture while also giving them an opportunity to explore their understanding of Saskatchewan treaties. The project involves a total of nine Horizon School Division Schools and approximately three hundred students, in grades two to eleven. The following is a brief overview of the project:
  • The nine schools that are participating in the project are: Punnichy Elementary, Punnichy High, Raymore, George Gordon, Wadena Elementary, Wadena Composite, Rose Valley, Robert Melrose, and Kelvington High.
  • Horizon School Division students are learning about treaties, as mandated by the Ministry of Education in Saskatchewan.
  • Saskatchewan artist Ray Keighley has visted the nine participating schools and met with students for three half days in March and early April.  He shared his knowledge, his experience as an artist, and his culture, as a Cree/Métis person.  He taught students about self expression through sketching and painting.
  • Students explored their artistic abilities by sketching and painting images that depict their understanding of the phrase “We are all treaty people”.
  • During the final workshop with Mr. Keighley, each student created a picture that was put together with their classmates pictures and finally with the pictures of the students from the other eight schools. The theme for the final collaborative artwork is “As long as the sun shines, the grass grows and the rivers flow”;
  • The collaborative art piece will go on exhibit at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon from April 19 to May 15.
  • Students will participate in a field trip to Saskatoon and visit the exhibit at the Mendel Gallery in early May.  They will participate in programming offered by the Mendel Gallery.
  • The exhibit will become a travelling exhibit in 2011-2012 and will be viewed by students in schools throughout Horizon School Division.
On May 1st at 2:00, Horizon School Division will host a reception at the Mendel Art Gallery exhibit.  You are invited to attend the reception and join our learning celebration!
