Building Supports for School Community Councils (March 23/2011)
A workshop developed BY School Community Council members FOR School Community Council members
Now that elections for School Community Councils have been completed, Horizon School Division and the SCC Focus Group, made up of eight SCC members from within the division, will be hosting a workshop for all SCC members. The intent of the workshop is to provide ongoing supports and networking opportunities for new and existing council members.

Carlton Trail Regional Science Fair Results (March 23/2011)
The Carlton Trail Regional Science Fair was held on Tuesday, March 22 at St. Peter's College in Muenster.  Congratulations to everyone who took part.  Click the following link for a list of all winners: results 2011.pdf

A special "thank you" goes out to Joel Taphorn (Muenster School) and Rebecca Cross (St. Peter's College) for all their work in leading the organization of this event.

Quill Lake School Legion Contest Presentation (March 18/2011)
On March 10th, a special presentation was made in front of the  school in the QLS Gymnasium.  Mr. Brian Turner and Mr. Bob Govan representing the Royal Canadian Legion, Quill Lake Branch # 33, called up six students who were winners in the annual Legion contest.   These students received recognition for their essays and artwork at both the zone and district level.  
The following received awards at the zone level:
  • Brie-Ann Lee - 1st  Place – Junior Poster Black & White (medal)
  • Karissa Kralkay – 2nd – Junior Poster (certificate)
  • Sydney Odelein – 3rd – Junior Essay (certificate)
  • Sabrina Odelein – 1st – Intermediate Essay (medal)
  • Kyle Martin – 2nd – Senior Poster (certificate)
  • Kaid Kralkay – 2nd – Senior Poster Black & White (certificate)
Sabrina Odelein also won 2nd place for her Intermediate Essay at the District Level.  She received a cheque and a certificate. Congratulations to all our winners!

RMES Students Move On In Legion Contest (March 16/2011)
Congratulations to JanMark Rosalin (Gr. 4) and Carter Novak (Gr. 3) for their further accomplishments regarding their Legion Poster Contest Entries.  JanMark received a medal  for his Black and White Poster which was awarded First Place at the Zone Level.  He was also awarded Second Place at the District Level and received a certificate and a cheque for $20!
Carter's Black and White poster was awarded Second Place at the Zone Level.  Carter received a certificate.  
Presentations to the two students were made by Legion Members, David Ewen and Margaret Franks. Mrs. Franks thanked the teahers and the students for their involvement in "Keeping the Memories Alive".  She also commented on the wonderful job the students and teachers did with their November 11th Service held at the school.

Rural High Schools Top Sask. Ranking (March 15/2011)
Many of Saskatchewan's small, rural high schools ranked higher than their counterparts in the larger cities. A new study of 283 schools indicates that high school programs in Lake Lenore School get an A+.

Telemiracle Pancake Breakfast A Success At Nokomis School (March 15/2011)
Thank you so much for the outstanding support at our Telemiracle Pancake Breakfast! The Pancake Breakfast, along with the penny wars in the classrooms, and selling "helping hands", we have raised over $700 to donate to Kinsmen Telemiracle! Thank you again for attending and supporting these events in our school - you make all the difference!

Nokomis School Breakfast For Learning/Snack Program (March 15/2011)
The school’s SNACK program has been a huge success once again.  Funding for the program comes from 2 sources. BHP Billiton, through the Breakfast For Learning group, supplied us with the bulk of the funding. The Nokomis School Community Council has picked up the rest. On behalf of the staff and students of the school, we thank both groups for their support of this worthwhile school program.

W.E.S. Annual Skate-a-thon a Huge Success (March 15/2011)
Thank you to the students who collected pledges for this years Skate-a-thon. Students at Wynyard Elementary School raised $6464.91. Half of the money stays at the school for various student activities and half was donated to Telemiracle. Students you made us proud…. Way to show your school and community pride!!

The Three Lakes Avengers made it a two-for-two sweep in junior basketball districts last weekend, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams bringing home the pennant.

The Three Lakes Avengers boys captured the junior boys’ district basketball pennant in Humboldt on Saturday, holding off the charging St. Brieux Crusaders by a 45-42 count.

“Horizon is coming together as a School Division” (March 10/2011)
On Monday March 7, 2011 Ministry of Education officials met with Horizon School Division for the bi-annual Continuous Improvement Framework (CIF) conference. Since amalgamation in January 2006, school divisions have worked diligently to meeting the requirements set forth by the Ministry of Education in the Continuous Improvement Framework (CIF). The four CIF Priorities are.
  • Higher levels of literacy and student achievement
  • Equitable opportunities for all students
  • Smooth transitions into and through systems
  • Strong system-wide accountability and governance
In response to the stated priorities, the Horizon School Division Board of Education aligned the Division goals with those of the Ministry.

Watrous (Winston) High Girls Curling Team wins SHSAA Gold (March 9/2011)

The Watrous Senior Girls' Curling team, consisting of Skip Jessica Hanson, 3rd Janelle Regier, 2nd Kora Hayter, Lead Sarah Hanson, and Coach Kathy Hanson, captured the SHSAA championship gold medal in Regina on March 5 after an incredible season.  Their hard work and focus carried them quite capably through pre-districts, districts, regionals, and finally provincials without a single loss.  Winston High and the town of Watrous are very proud of the girls!

Kaytlin Hantke Humboldt’s Junior Citizen of the Year (March 3/2011)
The 2011 Junior Citizen of the Year, Kaytlin Hantke, was shocked when she heard her new title.
“I didn’t know I was nominated,” said Hantke.
When Hantke’s teacher, Kerri Archibald, asked her to write down her achievements, the Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI) Grade 12 student didn’t realize she was being nominated for Humboldt and District’s Junior Citizen of the Year.

Outstanding Teacher Communications (March 3/2011)

Check this out!
Mr. Kelly Schermann from Raymore school recently launched his new website/blog http://kschermann.wordpress.com/ .  This outstanding communication tool is designed keep people in touch with what is happening in his classes. Parents are encouraged to subscribe to the blog in order to receive regular updates with regard to homework for their children. At the very least parents are encouraged to bookmark the site and visit it at their leisure as a valuable tool for school and home communication. For students, this is the first place they should refer to when they have missed class.

McClellan School Has Heart! (March 2/2011)
- Telemiracle - We have been raising money all year through hat days on Thursdays, and are having a "Chili" Lunch fundraiser on Thursday March 3rd. (We hope to raise over $300)  Also, grade 12 student Cody Gieselman will be performing regularly from 2 am until 6 am on Saturday night. Cody will be singing and playing guitar as part of the on-going show.
- The school is also involved in a fundraiser called "Pennies for Patients" which raises funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma. Staff and students are filling fundraising boxes with their loose change to help out.
- Nicole Dyck, a grade 12 student from McClellan School won a Bronze Medal at the Canada Winter Games held in Halifax. She won the bronze in the 63-70 Kg Individual Female Judo competition. Congratulations Nicole!
