Members of the Horizon School Division Board of Education and Principals were entertained by an informative and interactive presentation that explained what PWIM is and how it works.

 PWIM is a picture, word, inductive model of teaching Language Arts. It is an inquiry oriented strategy that includes explicit instruction and structured inductive activities. The focus is to develop skills in reading and writing.

PWIM consists of many cycles throughout the year. It uses a large, specially designed photograph to generate words and sen-tences. It supports student learning of sight words which includes expanding their speaking vocabulary into a reading and writ-ing vocabulary. This is achieved by the classification of words using phonics, word structure, context, and letter identification. This provides for the use of Read Alouds with many non-fiction materials. This study of words leads into the writing of titles, factual sentences and paragraph building. The use of Think Alouds facilitates this. Comprehension of words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs and extended text levels is a vital part of PWIM.

Assessment for learning throughout each cycle enables the teacher to incorporate the areas of student needs and gives direction as to the required curriculum outcomes.

The teachers in the pilot schools will attend eight training sessions throughout the year with the Saskatoon Public School Divi-sion.

A visit into a PWIM classroom during a cycle would show the children engaged in these moves: Shake Out of Words, See-Say-Spell sessions, Reading and Classifying of words, sentence building, sentence reading and classification, paragraph building and generating titles throughout the cycle. Students work independently and cooperatively on activities. The strategy builds on the knowledge the students bring and share with their classmates. Their enthusiasm and learning are evident at each step.
