Humboldt, Watrous Crowned Provincial Football Champions (November 13/2010)
Humboldt and Watrous captured the title of Provincial Champion in the 9-man and 2A 6-man categories respectively with convincing victories in the Provincial Football Finals.

In the 9-man final, Humboldt took on the host Delisle team.  The first half was fairly even but a goal line stand by the Humboldt defense followed by a key touchdown in the dying seconds of the half created an 8 point lead and swung momentum their way.  Two key strips in the second half contributed to a 37-7 final score.  This was Humboldt's second Provincial Championship in three years.

In Watrous, the host Wildcats returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Hudson Bay and never relinquished the lead.  It was a high scoring affair, but very close at the half, with Watrous holding on to a 36-27 lead.  The third quarter sealed the victory for Watrous as they scored four majors to take command.  The final score was 80-35.  Watrous last won the Provincial Championship in 2006 (and finished 2nd in 2007).

Lake Lenore, Middle Lake Take Provincial Soccer Titles

It was another medal haul for HCAA soccer teams at the 2010 SHSAA Provincial Championships, with four teams earning top three finishes in their respective categories, including two Provincial Champions.

The Lake Lenore boys thrilled their hometown crowd by earning their fourth Provincial 1A Boys Soccer Championship in the past six years.  In the semifinal, Lake Lenore scored at the 20 minute of the second half to break a 2-2 tie and finished with a 4-2 victory.  In the championship final, Lake Lenore led from start to finish in defeating Chief Poundmaker 3-1.

In 1A Girls, it was a familiar match-up in the championship final, as Lake Lenore and Middle Lake met for an amazing 7th time this season, but this time with the provincial gold medal on the line.  The game was tied at 1-1 after regulation, and 20 minutes of overtime solved nothing.  Middle Lake won the shoot-out and the gold medal, with Lake Lenore taking home silver.

In 7 v 7 Boys, Muenster took home the bronze by defeating the host team 2-1 in the third place game.

In 2A Girls, the host Humboldt Collegiate team captured the consolation side (5th place).

Robert Melrose School Goes Digital (October 29/2010)
The staff at Robert Melrose Elementary School in Kelvington are excited about digital communications. On October 29, the first correspondance was sent to local parents via email inviting them to download the new digital newsletter. The school has had a progressive website in place for several months that features daily updates and event information for parents and community members.
Although a few paper copies of the newsletter will still be distributed, approximately 70% of parents in the community have already signed up to receive digital information from the school and that number is expected to continue to grow.
The implementation of digital communications in schools had proven to save time and money while providing important information to parents in an efficient and timely manner.

(October 28/2010)

Maureen Tait of  Nokomis School has been awarded a $400 Hellmann’s Real Food Grant which will  be used to fund an after school Junior Chef Program. The grant was awarded through Hellmann’s Real Food Grant Program, an initiative launched in 2010  which has provided $100,000 in funding to community  advocates and organizations across Canada who are helping to connect  families with real food.

“We launched  Hellmann’s Real Food Grants program this year to demonstrate to Canadians that  Hellmann’s is committed to helping Canadians get more real food into our  lives,” says Stephanie Cox, Brand Manager for Hellmann’s in Canada. “We’ve  been overwhelmed by the positive public response to the program and the  hundreds of really inspiring things people are doing to support real food in  their communities. Selecting the programs we could support was an extremely  difficult process, but I am confident we have made the right  choice.”
